The world’s 50 best restaurants for 2023 revealed

The city of Lima, often regarded as the gastronomic heart of Peru, made a remarkable impact at The World's 50 Best Restaurants awards held this Tuesday. Lima claimed the coveted top spot and secured more positions within the top 50 than any other city globally.

Four esteemed Lima-based restaurants graced the 50 Best list, with Central claiming the No. 1 spot, Maido at No. 6, Kjolle at No. 28, and Mayta at No. 47. Notably, Kjolle entered the top 50 for the first time this year.

Central, under the culinary leadership of Virgilio Martinez and Pía Léon, has been celebrated for its exquisite dining experience rooted in Peruvian ingredients and techniques for a remarkable 15 years. Described on the 50 Best website as a journey through 15 distinct Peruvian ecosystems, Central's offerings range from 15 meters beneath the Pacific Ocean to 4,200 meters high in the Andes. Kjolle, on the other hand, represents Pía Léon's solo venture.

Central now proudly holds the distinction of being the first South American restaurant to claim the coveted "World's Best" title.

The awards ceremony, often referred to as the Oscars of the fine dining world, took place in the City of Arts and Sciences, a futuristic architectural marvel designed by renowned architect Santiago Calatrava, located in the southern Spanish city of Valencia.

Other Highlights from the List:

  • Spain, as the host country, had an impressive showing this year with six entries in the top 50, including Disfrutar in Barcelona at No. 2, Diverxo in Madrid at No. 3, and Asador Etxebarri in Atxondo in the Basque region at No. 4.
  • Italy and France also demonstrated strong performances in Europe, with five Italian restaurants and four French establishments securing spots in the top 50. London, England, made a notable presence with three slots.
  • In Asia, Bangkok stood out as a city to watch, with two restaurants making their debut on the list, both entering the top 20: Le Du at No. 15 and Gaggan Anand at No. 17.
  • From the United States, two New York restaurants secured spots in the top 50. Atomix climbed to No. 8 from last year's No. 33 position, earning the Highest Climber award and the title of Best Restaurant in North America. The perennial favorite, Le Bernardin, led by chef Éric Ripert, also earned a spot in the top 50 at No. 44.
  • This year's top 50 featured restaurants from 24 different territories spanning five continents, with 12 establishments making their inaugural appearance on the list.

It's important to note that restaurants are eligible to win the top prize only once, after which they enter a separate "Best of the Best" program. Among the elite establishments in this group are Geranium and Noma in Copenhagen, Eleven Madison Park in New York, The Fat Duck near London, Osteria Francescana in Modena, Italy, and Mirazur in Menton, France. Central will join this exclusive circle starting next year.
