Choosing equipment for schools and education facilities

Education environments need commercial capability with clear supervision, durable construction and simple day-to-day operation. A teaching kitchen is designed around many learners completing the same process at once, while a canteen is designed around safe, efficient production within a short service window. These different needs should be planned separately, even when they share storage or wash-up facilities.

Design for supervision and consistency

Teacher sightlines, safe circulation and consistent workstation layouts make demonstrations easier and reduce uncertainty for students. Standardising controls, bench heights, appliances and smallwares across stations can simplify lesson planning, maintenance and replacement. Allow secure storage for knives, chemicals and portable electrical equipment.

Plan the full class load

Services must support the number of students working simultaneously. Confirm electrical capacity, ventilation, water, drainage, refrigeration and wash-up requirements for a full class—not one demonstration station. Landing space around hot equipment and clear separation between preparation, cooking and cleaning are essential.

Choose robust, easy-to-clean equipment

Repeated use by different learners places unusual demands on handles, controls and accessories. Prioritise commercial construction, simple cleaning and accessible safety information. Stainless work surfaces, colour-coded preparation tools and suitable storage can support consistent food-safety routines between classes.

Equip canteens around the service window

Map the menu, meals per break, staff or volunteer numbers and the time available for service. Refrigeration, preparation, cooking and hot or cold holding should work together. Energy efficiency and simple controls are valuable, but only if the equipment can recover during peak demand.

ICE Group supplies student hospitality kits, cooking equipment, refrigeration, preparation tools, stainless benches and hygiene products to schools and training providers across Australia. ICE Group also has relevant project experience with education facilities including Keira High School and Moruya High School. For new rooms, upgrades or canteen projects across Sydney, Wollongong, the Illawarra and the South Coast, send the room plan, class size and equipment brief for practical selection support.
